Clinical Vascular Scientist - Royal Cornwall Hospital

Please note that the closing date for this vacancy is 23:59 on the 11th of December 2025 and the interviews will be held on the 22nd of December 2025.

A relocation package of up to £8,000 may be available for applicants who meet the criteria outlined in the Trust's Relocation Policy.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, experienced accredited Clinical Vascular Scientist to join our small friendly team here at the Vascular Studies Unit in Cornwall. The Vascular Studies Unit is based at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, but services also extend to other peripheral sites across the county, providing imaging for one-stop Vascular Clinics (Surgeon/nurse lead), multidisciplinary Diabetic Foot Clinics, weekly Vascular Hot Clinics, the Thrombosis Outpatient Service and rapid access TIA clinics, as well as inpatients and outpatients. The Vascular Studies Team work closely with the Consultant Vascular Surgeons, Interventional Radiologists, and other consultant groups, to provide a wide range of non-invasive diagnostic vascular examinations. The Vascular Surgery department currently employs six Consultant Vascular Surgeons and 2 Advanced Clinical Practice Nurses. The Trust has a bespoke Interventional Radiology department with a Hybrid endovascular suite and 6 interventional radiologists.

If successful you will get to work in a beautiful part of the country, independently carrying out clinical investigations, contributing to the development of the vascular studies service and playing an important role in the management of patients with vascular disease.

Vascular Scientists are allocated 20% non-scanning time to perform non-clinical duties such as attending MDT meetings, teaching/training, CPD activities, QA/audit/departmental meetings, mandatory training and other additional service management duties as required. We would actively support anyone wishing to serve on the various CSVS committees.

On appointment you will be required to carry out and supervise others, performing complex detailed diagnostic ultrasound examinations to the highest standard and independently report the findings on a full range of vascular ultrasound investigations. This includes carotid duplex, upper limb arterial and venous duplex, lower limb arterial and venous (including TOS/popliteal entrapment examinations) duplex, graft surveillance, pre-fistula mapping, post fistula surveillance, AAA surveillance, EVAR follow-up and pre-operative marking.

Ideally you are an CSVS accredited Clinical Vascular Scientist or graduate of the STP scheme in vascular science with some supplementary experience to be appointed at a Band 7. Applications may be considered (on a lower pay band) for those nearing completion of the vascular STP training, or from sonographers/radiographers with experience in vascular scanning. A desire to gain full AVS accreditation would be encouraged and supported.

The Vascular Studies Team comprises of 3 clinical vascular scientists (2.4 WTE), a full-time trainee vascular scientist, an administrator and imaging assistant who all work closely with various other clinical staff, including the Vascular Surgeons, Interventional Radiologists, Renal Physicians, Stroke clinicians and Thrombosis Service. The Unit has 2 new GE LOGIQ E10s and LOGIQ Totus as part of the Trust managed equipment service contract. There are also 2x Canon i800 Aplios and continuous wave Doppler equipment.

Vascular Studies provide services at additional peripheral hospital sites across the county so a full driving licence and access to a car for work is essential.

The Trust has teaching hospitals status as part of the University of Exeter Medical School. Keeping at the forefront of medical advances, we continually develop clinical services and are committed to maximising the range of specialist care offered locally.

Cornwall is a lovely place to live, providing an outstanding quality of life in a place that offers surfing beaches and fishing harbours to beautiful countryside and historic towns. Truro is a small, intimate city within a vibrant county that offers a wide range of services for both business and leisure interests. With clean air, plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities and excellent schools, colleges and universities (including adult education) it is the ideal place for families and for you to develop your own career. Cornwall is served well by road, rail and air, with Newquay airport providing services to a wide range of UK & European destinations.

This post is currently for 37.5 hours per week (full-time) but part-time or job share and flexible working may also be considered.
