About the role:
The role is to assist the principal clinical vascular scientist in managing the Vascular Laboratory to provide a non-invasive diagnostic service to the Vascular Surgery Department and other referring consultants within the Trust. You will carry out and supervise others, performing complex detailed diagnostic ultrasound exams to the highest standard. You will provide leadership and vision in the day to day running and future development of the Vascular Laboratory in collaboration with the principal clinical vascular scientist.
In addition, you will be the primary lead for setting up and managing the Scientist Training Programme (STP) within the Vascular Laboratory and on general education and training provision/development matters within the department.
You will also be the primary lead for research and audit activities within the department. You will be expected to collaborate, further develop, and facilitate research within the Vascular Laboratory as well as build closer ties with the research arm of the St George’s Vascular Institute. You will be encouraged to publish work and present at national and international scientific meetings. The aim is to advance vascular science and continue to uphold the overall stature/reputation of the current vascular laboratory.
Requirements
You will be expected to have a BSc and MSc (or equivalent) in a relevant science, extensive experience (minimum of 4 years post accreditation) in vascular ultrasound and hold accreditation as a clinical vascular scientist or equivalent. Management experience is desirable, but not essential.
You need to be able to work both independently and as part of our team whilst demonstrating high levels of competency. Excellent communication skills, outstanding interpersonal skills together with a caring and professional attitude are essential.
About the Vascular Laboratory:
Our friendly team consists of 5 highly experienced accredited Clinical Vascular Scientists (4 full-time including this post and 1 part-time), 1 Vascular Healthcare Science Practitioner and 1 administrator. The Vascular Laboratory is located next to a 22-bed vascular ward and consists of 2 air-conditioned scanning rooms, 3 GE ultrasound machines (2 x Logiq e10 and 1 x Logiq e9) and a reporting area with 5 workstations.
We perform a wide variety of vascular ultrasound investigations including carotid, TCD (theatre and sickle cell anaemia), upper and lower limb arterial and venous, stents, BPG, vein mapping, AAA, EVAR, pre-fistula mapping, AVF, dorsal arch, TOS, POP entrapment and temporal artery. As we are a tertiary centre, we are often referred unusual and complex cases.
We work closely with an extraordinary team of vascular specialists (10 vascular surgeon consultants, 8 vascular registrars and 3 junior doctors) and nurses. We participate in MDTs and provide an outpatient one-stop clinic service for the Vascular Surgery department. We also provide a service for other key disciplines from across the hospital, working closely with the specialists.
St George’s Vascular Institute:
The St George’s Vascular Institute integrates clinical, research and educational activities within a single organisational structure across St George’s Hospital Healthcare NHS Trust. The clinical service is organised in a regionalised hub and spoke model. St George’s acts as the central hub in a clinical network that encompasses Kingston, Epsom, St Heliers, Croydon University and East Surrey Hospitals. In this network, inpatient elective and emergency arterial surgery is centred on the St George’s site. The institute has particular interests in complex aneurysm repair, aortic dissection, the management of critical limb ischemia including evolving lower limb endovascular procedures and carotid disease.
