History of the CSVS

1992: The CSVS was established in March. The main goal was to advance non-invasive vascular diagnostic services by promoting training and research in Vascular Technology and to disseminate the results of such research for the benefit of the public. In bringing together all those engaged in providing vascular laboratory services, the CSVS now functions as the national scientific and educational society for Clinical Vascular Scientists working in Great Britain and Ireland.

In doing this, the society developed national standardised professional training and an accreditation scheme. The Accreditation certification provides employers and patients with the confidence that the individual has reached and maintains the national standards set for vascular ultrasound investigations.

1993: The CSVS were one of the parent bodies of the Consortium for Accreditation of Sonographic Education (CASE). Since this, the CSVS has produced a quarterly newsletter for its members, with topical articles and updates on professional issues.

1994: The CSVS began offering an accreditation scheme for those practicing vascular ultrasound. It is a globally renowned qualification which demonstrates individuals have a minimum of 3 years clinical experience, a high level of theoretical knowledge, have performed an extensive portfolio of over 2000 scans and an in-depth practical assessment of skills. All AVS members are then required to maintain their knowledge and skills through a continued professional development system.

Since then, the CSVS also has involved in hosting study days and the Annual Scientific Meeting, Some of these have been joint study days with the Venous Forum and BMUS. The CSVS has also forned close links with the Circulation Foundation, who offer a sponsored research grant to an CSVS member every year.

2000: The CSVS became a registered charity.
